Forgive yourself as you do others

We’re familiar with the Proverb that states don’t go to bed angry and give the devil a foothold. “In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” (Ephesians 4:26-27) How true is that? Every time, I am tempted to go to sleep after a disagreement I think about what the morning will be like with that still on my mind. Too often we hold grudges against another and usually the other person does not even realize that they have offended us! What does that do to us? In the mean time, we have bitterness taking root like gangrene within our soul and we can’t concentrate on anything but the hurt that we have endured. How many times have you felt that way about yourself? You know that you blew it with regard to something. At the time, it felt so incredibly important, but now it is just downright silly. It’s hard to admit the mistake because it is very hard to humble ourselves due to our human ego. Well, every time we hold on to something that we did, we are hurting ourselves more than anyone else. It is just as important to forgive ourselves as it is to forgive another’s offense to us.
