Salty

I had an unusual experience yesterday as I received Eucharist.

My tastebuds detected salt in the most profound way. Of course, my thoughts went immediately to Jesus' words in Matthew 5 when his followers were compared to the salt of the earth.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet." (Matthew 5:13)

Most recipes call for just a little bit of salt and we can tell when there's too much and when there isn't any at all.

In the case of my experience Sunday at Mass, it only took a little taste of salt for me to recognize its presence and contemplate its deeper meaning.

My goal this week is to find new ways of sprinkling God's love and presence in my corner of the world. It just may perk up someone's thirst and restore a fresh and flavorful outlook, just as my experience did for me.

As Mother Teresa said, "Do small things with great love."

A little dash goes a long way.
