My husband went grocery shopping the other day as he usually does. He returned home with an item I never would have expected...imitation lobster. My first reaction...yuck! When asked why he bought it, his reply, "I had a coupon." He continued, "It's real fish...it tastes like lobster."
Then I read something that invited me to contemplate this a little further.
Ephesians 5:1 instructs us to be imitators of Christ. Ok...that's a good thing. Why am I so put off with the thought of imitation lobster? Is it because I have tasted and enjoyed the fresh, rich real flavor of a Maine lobster roll?
When I cook or bake, I use nothing but the best, authentic ingredients. I believe this really makes a difference in the final outcome of the recipe. So, ok, how does this apply to being an "imitator of Christ"? I mean, after all, I long to be and to act like Jesus. However, I can never truly "be" Jesus and furthermore, I am not pretending like this plastic, package of chunk, phony fish parts.
Perhaps it comes down to this...I'm not trying to pretend to be something I'm not. I'm not trying to fool anyone. My motivation is to be authentic in my expression of the love and actions of Jesus. To be real...as I imitate God...because I have tasted God's love and goodness and recognize its immeasurable value. No coupon required!
"Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma." Ephesians 5:1
